Embellished Scrapbook Necklaces

Hey friends, Adrianne here with you today!  Do you love creating scrapbook layouts?  If you do, I’ve got a great idea for you that you may not have considered: make your passion small-scale, and create beautiful jewelry from your ideas!  Bezel trays hold 1-2 inch circles and squares that you can punch, emboss, add charms or photos to, and then seal up with Mod Podge Dimensional Magic or resin.  It’s easier than you think, and I’m going to show you how today!

Scrapbook Necklace Supplies:

  • Scrap of Chalk Core card stock with blue core
  • Scissors
  • Darice lips embossing folder
  • Sizzix Big Shot, or your favorite manual embossing machine
  • Sand it Gadget
  • Mod Podge Metal Blank Charms, or any type of metal bezel
  • Charms like self-adhesive pearls, letters, flowers, or whatever you love
  • Mod Podge Dimensional Magic
  • 18″ chain
  • 10 mm jump ring
  • Flat-nosed jewelry pliers

The possibilities of how to put these sweet necklaces together are endless, but I’ll tell you how I made this contemporary love-themed necklace!

Step 1. First, cut a scrap of Chalk Core paper to fit your metal bezel.  Position it in the embossing folder, and emboss!  Sand it with your Sand-It Gadget to bring out the colored core.

Step 2. Play around with your layout!  I ultimately selected “XO” charms and a few flat-backed pearls.  You can place them with glue dots so that they don’t shift around, if you are adding a few different embellishments.  Don’t forget, photos, gems, and other shapes are all great choices to add.  If you’re adding multiple layers of paper, sealing them together with Mod Podge before continuing may be a good idea.

Step 3. Taking care not to shake the bottle of Dimensional Magic, slowly add a few drops at a time to the top of your pendant tray, until it’s domed around the edges.  Don’t be alarmed when it looks cloudy at first – it dries clear!

As long as you don’t over-fill the tray, it won’t spill over, even if it’s filled higher than the sides of the bezel.  You’ll get a great domed look with Dimensional Magic.  If you get any bubbles, pop them with a toothpick, because they will harden into your piece if you don’t.

Step 4. Twist open your jump ring with your pliers, and add it into the ring of your bezel.  Add the chain.

Step 5. Allow your pendant to dry.  It will at least take 3-4 hours. You may find that after one coat, you want to add a second coat of Dimensional Magic (especially if you do what I did, and touch it before it dries fully, leaving an annoying fingerprint).  Rest assured, if you have a rough spot in your finish, a thin extra coat will fix it.  You’ll be left with a hard, shiny finish that fully protects everything within your pendant.

Play around with other layouts and color combinations for different looks!  Are you getting ideas of what to put in your pendant?  I’d love to hear if you make one!

The great thing about the David Tutera Celebrate Cardmaking system is it’s versatility.  Basicall you can swap ideas that you see here with any of the sentiments OR just make a “You’re Special” card and keep it on hand for any occasion that arises.

Designer Margie Higuchi created this example for us today.

Here are a few tips:

1.) Use the die cut shapes on the Step  Two layers to match and place your sentiment.

2.) Mix and match the Step 3 pearls from other packs.  These pink pearls are found in the Butterfly 2 Shapes & Cupcake Shapes both of which were not used on this card.

3.) Use a SQUARE cardbase! EEEEK! These are so great and not that hard to do. See how Margie used the Step 2 A2 layer and then balanced it with the Border Strips?  Brilliant and EASY!

Have a beautiful day!
