Designing with Gail Linder

ONE amazing Monday and THREE incredible layouts from Gail Linder!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sweet Delight Layout
I have a secret to share today. Sometimes I scraplift my own layouts! Gasp!
Seriously, if you’re ever “stuck” for ideas, just choose an older layout of your own that you loved and scraplift it using new products or techniques!
That’s exactly what I did for today’s layout.
Sweet-Delight-wm
I knew I wanted to create bright, fun blocks at the top of the layout and I wanted to use Core cardstock (of course) showing a couple of techniques.
I cut 10 squares of cardstock (in 6 different colours) that were 2″x2″. After finding the arrangement that I was happy with I simply when from square to square, embellishing slightly.
Sweet-Delight-cu1-wm
Some of the techniques I used include:
  • Embossing (you could also try de-bossing)
  • Sanding and inking
  • Adding die cuts (some raised on pop dots)
  • Punching out a shape from the square, using the negative space
  • Punching a circle ‘notch’ from the corner to add in a circular embellishment
I kept them quite simple as I wanted to fabulous colours to stand out!
And take a look where my journaling is hidden in this one:
Sweet-Delight-cu2-wm
The photo panel lifts up to reveal journaling underneath! I just folded a piece of white core cardstock to be the ‘flap’.
You can actually see the original layout that inspired this one on my blog here. I hope I’ve inspired you to look back at your older layouts for inspiration with fresh eyes!
One Little Word Layout
Do you follow the One Little Word concept? Although I’m a little late sharing my One Little Word for 2014, I have had it chosen since the end of last year, or rather, it came to me as per usual! Give.
I decided to create a layout for my word, using a phone selfie of myself (it’s the only recent photo I could find of me!).
2014-Give-wm
I created the background to this layout by overlapping pieces of Core’dinations cardstock in pink and aqua with a few scraps of patterned paper. The card was cut at an angle (alternating directions) and I started from the bottom and worked my way up!
I gave all pieces of cardstock a quick sand to reveal a bit of the lighter core, for more dimension.
2014-Give-cu1
A couple more things to note:
  • The title was cut using my Cameo. The word ‘give’ was cut out of Black Magic card (with a pink core) so when the edges had a light sand, they had a bit of pink showing to coordinate with the rest of the layout!
  • I didn’t think my photos and title stood out enough on the busier background so I again used my Cameo to cut the circle design out of simple white cardstock to layer beneath! I love that effect and think it’s something I’ll be doing again and again!
2014-Give-cu2-wm
I didn’t want to cover up any more of the background with a journaling blog and knew I had a bit to say about my OLW. An easy solution? I journalled on a white core tag, slipped it into a glassine bag and adhered it behind my photos. Love me some hidden journaling!
If you are interested in reading about why I chose this particular word, and more about my personal OLW journey, please visit my blog here!
I hope I’ve inspired you today!
Crazy Layout
Hello! I have another fun and colorful layout to share today! Can you tell I love putting together awesome color combinations with my Core’dinations cardstock? For this layout, I was inspired by a card I saw around the web that had strips of washi tape on the background. I tried to re-create the look with strips of embossed card.
Crazy-wm
I wanted the colors to “pop” so I used the reverse of a Kraft Core cardstock for a neutral kraft background. Then I chose six bright colors for my strips and got to work adding some texture to each strip.
Crazy-cu1-wm
You can see in the detail photos that a couple of strips are embossed and sanded to reveal the core. A few other strips I added some lines and borders simply using my Scor-Pal: a criss-cross, stripes and an outline.
Snow Day Layouts!
First up we want to wish everyone a very SAFE and HAPP New Year!  We could not have had such a successful year without YOU! OUr HARD CORE CRAFTERS!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I don’t know about you but a lot of team has been getting hit with snow in their respective states so why not share a little bit of that Snow Day love today?!

I hope this post finds you warm and cozy! Suzanna here from Life’s Trivialities  to share with you a winter layout created with left over scraps of Coredinations cardstock. Gather colors in the hues of a pleasing snowy palate, emboss a few and lay them out as you would a cozy warm quilt. In order to tie the paper into the theme of the layout, chose snow filled embossing folders. Fill in some holes with David Tutera tags and zig zag with your sewing machine (or use a pen for faux stitching). The layers of the layout in some places are as numerous as the layers you will need to be out in that winter wonderland. Voila! The base of your layout, it’s that easy!

Let’s start today off with festive layout from Tim Holz Seasonal Kraft Core with Designer Suzanna Lee:

For those of you who have followed my blog, you’ve already heard my rave review of the Xyron MegaRunner. You can read all about it here. Having had the chance to use my MegaRunenr A LOT more since that review, I am still a big fan! The cartridges are so easy to just drop in and get scrapping. You don’t have to rely on that one friend who threads it for you, nor do you have to keep re-threading. Big bonuses! The Create-A-Sticker “X” has been sitting on my desk for AGES. I think it’s the one adhesive that still remains from early, early days. It’s the tried and true work horse for letters (like the title on this layout) and smaller embellishements (like the pumpkins, ribbon and burlap). New “wows” that I got to play with in the making of this layout with are the 3/16 inch dots and 1/2 inch double sided tape, each with their own environmentally friendly dispenser. The double sided tape is fantastic when you’re using Core’dinations products in that sometimes the sanded Core, no matter how clean that Dust Buddy gets it, can be a little more resistant to stick and bond to more Core. Not the case with Xyron’s double sided tape! Thanks Xyron for some innovative, earth friendly and reliable adhesives!

And next up we have a Designer Gail Linder with a GREAT layout featuring the Xyron Mega Runner.

Inspired by an advert I saw online, I wanted to create a background with even strips of cardstock. Once I chose my colors and cut my strips, it was so quick and easy to adhere them to a background cardstock using the Xyron Mega Runner!
To add interest and texture, one of my strips is the gorgeous Tillie Dot embossed cardstock. Before all the strips were adhered, I gave them all a slight sand to reveal a bit of their core with my Sand it Gadget.Finally, I wanted to add a large ’2′ to my background but didn’t want to detract from my strips so I simply hand-stitched the outline of the number.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Today we have new Design Team Member…… Suzanna Lee!
Check out more about Suzanna and her projects on her blog HERE. Here is a little bit about her:
What can I say? I’m just a woman who is obsessed with her husband, her 2 kids, her camera (a Nikon!), living life to the fullest and preserving our memories as we go! Michael and I have been happily married for 14 years. Together we are raising two amazing children—Nikolas, 10, and Mia,almost 7.
I am very diverse when it comes to styles and techniques. I can’t claim any one as a main stay in my projects. I range from clean and simple to layered and packed with little details. The paper and photographs speak to me and I do what feels right. New styles, techniques, products, etc. are some of the major things that offer me inspiration. I am always excited to try new things and new opportunities, in life and with paper crafting.
When I’m not hiding behind my camera or cutting and creating both mess and beauty, I’m a physical therapist. I love what I do and love that it helps fund my hobby and collection! Who needs purses and shoes when you can have paper and embellishments?!
And how much do you loooooove the color combo of this layout??? I just love learning all these random bits about Suzanna.
And some close ups:
Ohhhhhh…embossing! :) Our 6×6 pads are a great way to add small deatils to layouts….they aren’t just for cards!
Now a little bit about Suzanna’s layout:
Every now and again, I try to do a page about myself. My kids love pouring through the albums and love seeing themselves but I know there will come a time when they will wish there was more of Mum and Dad. I know I love learning the little details of my parents’ lives. This layout served that purpose as well as sharing a little bit about myself with you. Random bits about Suzanna Lee. I literally wrote the first 5 thoughts that came to mind. I did say random! I also wanted to showcase how amazing core is! There is one piece of patterned paper on this page, the majority of the paper is Core of one type or another. All those different lines come together as a cohesive whole! Amazing!
